We recently sent a letter to members and friends inviting you to join the church-wide effort to replace and rebuild the sanctuary roof, and to preserve and protect the church’s world-class pipe organs.
During this winter’s heavy rainstorms, the sanctuary roof began leaking, resulting in significant damage to the chancel organ. The response was swift, and the organ chamber roof was patched, but now when Natsuko plays that organ, she has to work masterfully around the organ’s damaged functionality.
It is clearly time to replace the 65-year-old roof! Our insurance will not cover the repair, as the damage is due to age, not to a particular storm. The Finance & Resources team has selected a roofing contractor, and Session has approved the cost of approximately $115,000, with an additional $4,000 needed to repair the chancel organ.
You'll see scaffolding go up around August 8, with much of the shingle removal occurring while the preschool is on break, and work should be completed in August.
Our church’s reserve funds, which have been built over the years through generous gifts, bequests, and diligent budgeting, are sufficient to cover “rainy day” needs such as this. However, with your help, we can safeguard those reserves for future needs. We’re launching this community-wide Raise the Roof appeal with the goal of raising $65,000 in contributions from those who love this church and call it home.
We know that many of us see the sanctuary as a church home that is at the center of our life in community. The sanctuary is indeed a "sanctuary" for all who enter – past, present, and future. It is a place where we can feel protected from the world, and strengthened for our work in the larger community. It is a place of peace and of music. A space where we feel loved and restored. A place where we reflect, laugh, pray, sing, and sometimes even dance together.
To date, we’ve raised over $38,000 in contributions from our church officers and early donors, so we’re well on our way! Please consider giving a gift to the Raise the Roof fund to help us reach our goal. Gifts of any amount are welcome and deeply appreciated. Every gift is an opportunity to play a part in restoring the roof that houses our community and creates a welcoming space for all those who walk through our doors. We ask that donations and pledges be in by September 1, as we anticipate celebrating the completion of the roof in the Fall.
