Prayers for the Week of August 22, 2021

Please feel free to join us in the prayers we prayed in worship, Sunday, August 22, 2021:

Loving God, Holy Wisdom,

we stand in the midst of so many things

that we don’t understand

that we can’t comprehend,

and so we are still,

and we know that you are God.

We pray for the people of Afghanistan

as they live these days in the midst of a crisis

that our nation has helped create.

We pray for the safety and well-being of all,

for the safe transport of those on the move,

that all may find refuge, shelter, and home.

We pray especially for those who have invited us in

to work as partners with them in the Bare Roots project,

for Asma’s family,

for Fahim Nazihi and his family.

We pray for the people of Haiti,

devastated by earthquake and storm,

for all they need to tend to the hurting,

to heal, recover, and rebuild.

May we find ways to reach out

across oceans and continents

to participate in ways that lead

to life, healing, and well-being

for all your children.

We pray for those in the Northeast of this country

experiencing Tropical Storm Henri,

and for those in this state and the West who face wildfires.

We pray for their well-being,

for the health and wholeness of all creation,

for the wherewithal to find our way

to sustainable ways of living

that repair and heal the earth

that we have harmed.

We pray for an end to pandemic

for help in the midst of suffering in this latest surge,

for healthcare works who are bone-weary,

serving with courage and heart,

bearing the cost of our collective failure

to join together in actions that can lead to health.

We pray that more come to wisdom

and a willingness to participate in vaccination and masking

that can help save their lives

and the lives of others.

We pray for an end to systemic racism,

and growing awareness of our complicity

and the work that is ours to do.

We stand in the midst of trouble this day,

and bring these concerns to you,

and we also bring our thanks,

and our joy.

We give you thanks for the birth

of Bennett Jones,

Dave and Marita’s new granddaughter,

born this Friday to Emily and Matt.

We give you thanks for Bennett Jones

and pray every blessing for her life,

may we surround this family with love

and help to support them as they

parent, raise, and love her.

We thank you for the gift of family and community,

for calling us into life and learning with each other,

joining our voices together,

with all who have ever called on your name,

praying the prayer that Jesus taught:

Our Father/Mother, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine in the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.
