Bible Study
Sunday Morning “Seasons of the Spirit” Bible Study
The Sunday morning adult Bible study meets at 9:00 a.m. in Room 203 of the Sunday School wing of the building from September through mid-June. This pastor-led class is based on the lectionary Bible passages. The lectionary is a list of Scripture readings for each Sunday and holy day in a three-year cycle. Many preachers and churches, including First Presbyterian Church of San Anselmo, use the lectionary to select the passages for preaching in worship on Sunday mornings. The passages studied in the Sunday morning “Seasons of the Spirit” class are likely to be the same ones read in worship later that morning. All are welcome; bring your Bibles!
Bible Study
The bimonthly Bible study will meet every second and fourth Wednesday in the Fireside Room at 10:00 a.m. during the academic year, led by Joanne Whitt, Pastor and Head of Staff. Starting on September 22, 2010, we'll be studying Journeys through Revelation: Apocalyptic Hope for Today.
What comes to mind when you think of the book of Revelation? Scary images? The four horsemen come to unleash destruction? Mysterious numbers such as “666”? The endtime battle of Armageddon? In recent years, an enormous prophecy industry has marketed frightening images of Revelation, leaving many people intimidated by this amazing and often misunderstood book. Although brimming with mysterious symbolism, Revelation ultimately is a book of hope that throughout history has sustained people who are oppressed. It is a wonderfully Christ centered book, full of worship and praise. All are welcome to the study. Check with the church office for information on the materials.
Horizons Bible Study
On September 11, 2010, we will host an all-day seminar beginning at 9:00 am to kick off the new year's study, Journeys through Revelation: Apocalyptic Hope for Today. In a journey reminiscent of the ancient Israelites’ exodus from slavery, we are led from an unjust empire and its system of domination, through mythic battles and plagues, until, ultimately, we find ourselves in a renewed creation where God comes to live with us on earth. This brilliantly hope filled vision speaks to us in the midst of the urgent crises of our day. In a time when all of creation stands at a turning point, a kairos moment, Revelation can help guide the choices we make each day as we seek to live into the renewal that God has for the whole world. The study will continue on the third Thursdays of October through May at 10:00 am in the Fireside Room, led by a Seminary student, TBA. |
